A New Jersey school district with a special needs population of nearly 1000, sought to improve their autism programming and return children in-district.
Scholastic Intervention Solution conducted an assessment to identify opportunities where they could improve educator readiness, increase teaching time, and enhance stakeholder communication. SIS proposed the special education department utilize their fully supported, cloud-based, ABA solution.
The solution was successful. By year two, the district returned several children in-district resulting in a financial benefit of up to $60,000 per year.
Over the past 10 years, the number of children diagnosed with autism had grown substantially within this NJ district. In addition, federal and state mandates had also become more onerous forcing the district to send many children out of district to get an appropriate education (FAPE). This option was extremely costly and not a long term solution.
Three years ago, the district endeavored to course-correct and committed to making the changes necessary to return children in-district. Part of this commitment was to engage Scholastic Intervention Solutions as a partner for professional development, technology, and support.
How We Helped
SIS conducted an assessment for the district to identify opportunities for improvement. The assessment focused on improving educator readiness at the point of teaching; creating administrative efficiencies; and enhancing communication within the child study teams.
Scholastic Interventions concluded that the district would be best served to employ the SIS suite of services including: SISu, SISwp, and SIShub.
SISu is a web-based professional development service. It provided the district educators (including paraprofessionals) with the necessary training and professional development they needed to improve their readiness – therefore, making the most of every teaching moment.
SISwp is a suite of tools that allows an educator to complete administrative tasks quickly and without redundancy. For instance, writing programs took hours in the past. With the help of SISwp, generating programs now takes minutes. These time saving tools, lead to more time teaching.
SIShub provides the technological infrastructure to enhance communication and improve oversight. With more information at the fingertips of each member of the child study team, they have the ability to see if a child is falling behind and proactively adjust an intervention and prevent regression.
As a result of the assessment, SIS proposed the district utilize its suite of services. The solution expanded the districts capacity to serve more children in-district, has shown improved outcomes, and is expected to deliver a financial benefit of up to $60,000 per year.
