Preschool | Kindergarten Readiness “BRIDGES”

Preschool | Kindergarten Readiness “BRIDGES”

Dec 14, 2020

We are proud to announce the launch of our new Preschool and Kindergarten Readiness program – “BRIDGES”!

TUT’s BRIDGES ABA and Social Skills preparatory programs provides children with autism the opportunity to transition and follow a “typical” preschool model to prepare them for preschool and kindergarten. The Bridges prep program is recommended for children who have made great strides in an intensive, Comprehensive ABA program or for children who require Focused ABA with an emphasis on socialization and learning in a group environment.

Students in our Bridges program learn and interact in small groups and follow more group instruction, however, each student has a dedicated, full time ABA therapist in the room to provide 1:1 ABA instruction (supervised by a BCBA), conduct observations and record their student’s progress.  Students participate in math, language arts, writing, art and science activities following a weekly themed curriculum.  All material is tailored to each child’s readiness level and individual learning style and ABA goals are embedded in six separate learning centers of the room.

TUT’s Bridges preparatory program program room is overseen by a Certified Teacher, the child’s ABA Therapist, and a BCBA overseeing direct programing and goals.  All children considered for the program are required to meet certain standard qualifications as well as have the recommendation of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

For children with autism, this program is a needed “bridge” that will certainly facilitate and ease the transition into a main stream educational setting and a more independent life.

Continued Success despite Pandemic

Continued Success despite Pandemic

Oct 12, 2020
  • TUT continues to safely provide life changing ABA therapy amid COVID-19.
  • TUT’s 4 phase approach to reopening our center doors was a huge success.  TUT is back to 100% capacity.
  • TUT now has the largest clinical staff in its history with 40 BCBAs and 92 ABA therapists. TUT continues to hire and train talented, dedicated people that long to make a difference in the life of a child.
  • TUT has hired a 4th Clinical Director.
  • TUT has launched the BRIDGES SOCIAL SKILLS ROOM – This transition program provides our students the opportunity to follow a “typical” preschool model and prepare them for kindergarten. The enhancement of social skills is paramount, and these students learn in small groups and follow more group instruction with less discrete trial teaching.  The class facilitates social interaction throughout the day, ABA goals are embedded in separate areas of the room and all is overseen by a certified teacher.
  • TUT’s Professional Development Academy has released new training course. “TUT Technician Training”  is a targeted training program for Behavior Technicians. Acknowledging the importance of highly skilled Behavior Technicians, TUT Technician Training provides the content and structure for a BCBA to efficiently train a Behavior Technician to meet BACB® established performance standards. Moreover, it affords a BCBA the flexibility to pivot the focus of training to suit the nuanced needs of their client – allowing for more strategic and targeted training.
  • TUT is providing close to two hours of BCBA supervision for every 10 hours of direct services for every child we support.
  • TUT is on target to reach 80,000 services hours of direct therapy for our kids this year.
  • TUT is currently serving 20 school districts in New Jersey.
  • TUT continues to provide education to Developmental Pediatricians, Neurologists, and related medical staff in autism treatment.
Almost 100,000 hours of ABA therapy recorded for NJ kids

Almost 100,000 hours of ABA therapy recorded for NJ kids

Feb 19, 2020

Last year,The Uncommon Thread (TUT) achieved the highest number of therapy hours in its history. By expanding its reach – through schools, hospitals, county Care Management Units, and Camps – TUT reached almost 100,000 ABA therapy hours and helped more than 78 children across New Jersey.

“Last year, we were very focused on increasing the number of kids we could provide ABA therapy,” says Greg Carr, Founder and CEO of TUT. “In order to accomplish this we took on kids in a variety of settings including: in-center, in-home, in-school, and in-community. It’s very gratifying to see more and more kids improving, it’s why we opened The Uncommon Thread.”

TUT Collaborative
The TUT Collaborative started organically. It was essentially a group of organizations that had a similar goal, to advance the lives of children with autism. Today, there are more than 50 participants including: 19 school districts, 17 Hospitals, 17 Care Management Organizations, and 9 camps.

Parent Training Program Shows Clear Gains

Parent Training Program Shows Clear Gains

Jan 18, 2016

TODDLERS GAIN SOCIAL-COMMUNICATION SKILLS WHEN PARENTS TAKE CLASSES; LARGER GAINS SEEN WHEN TRAINERS WORK WITH EACH PARENT IN HOME

In the largest study of its kind, researchers have demonstrated that toddlers with autism clearly benefit when their parents receive training in strategies that promote social communication. The benefits were modest when parents attended a weekly class. The toddlers gained significantly more skills when therapists visited their homes and worked with their parents, one on one, two or three times a week.

The study – begun with a research grant from Autism Speaks – was expanded with additional support from the National Institute of Mental Health. Its findings appear online in the journal Pediatrics.

“This study shows how valuable parents can be in implementing intensive interventions for their toddlers with autism spectrum disorder,” comments developmental pediatrician Paul Wang, Autism Speaks senior vice president for medical research. (Dr. Wang was not directly involved in the study.) “Intensive, individual training for parents may be especially important for helping younger children such as the toddlers in this study.”

The new findings, by researchers at Florida State University, build on the growing scientific evidence that training parents is an effective investment of time and resources. Last week, researchers reported on the gains seen in 2- to 6-year-olds with autism after their parents received ABA training. The goal of both studies was to evaluate whether parents could effectively augment, not replace, autism therapy delivered by trained professionals.

Classes versus in-home instruction
In the new study, researchers evaluated and compared the benefits of two, nine-month, parent-led intervention programs as part of Florida State’s Early Social Interaction Project. The project’s goals are to develop and evaluate early intervention programs for toddlers with autism and their families.

The researchers randomly assigned the parents of 82 toddlers (ages 16 to 20 months) affected by autism to either attend a weekly class or receive two or three in-home tutoring sessions each week.

The instruction focused on strategies that promote social communication. Social communication involves the use of eye gaze, facial expression, gestures and sounds to communicate. The intervention strategies also encouraged understanding of new words and learning how to use toys, tools and other objects. Children with autism tend to have learning difficulties in these areas.

Parents were encouraged to use the strategies with their children, 20 to 25 hours a week, during the course of daily living. This included not only playtime, but also meals, personal care and family chores. The parents also learned how to encourage social communication outside the home – for example, on a trip to a playground, grocery store or restaurant.

At the end of the nine-month study, parents completed questionnaires and examiners evaluated the children’s social communication skills. Importantly, the examiners did not know to which of the two groups each child belonged.

Both groups of children showed overall gains in social communication and word use. However, the children of the parents who received individual, in-home training showed substantially greater progress.
